Public Sector Health Trust – Database Migration
A Successful Database Migration for a NHS Trust
This project involved a significant transformation of a NHS Trust’s critical database infrastructure. We successfully migrated their 20TB Live and Data Warehouse environments from a legacy 2-node Real Application Clusters (RAC) cluster to a modern 3-node RAC cluster on Oracle Enterprise Linux 8 (OEL 8). This upgrade not only enhanced performance and reliability but also provided the NHS Trust with a more robust and scalable platform for the future.
Futureproofing Growth
The project encompassed several key aspects. Firstly, we architected and executed the migration to a 3-node RAC cluster with Oracle Grid Infrastructure 19c. This involved upgrading databases from 11gR2 to the latest 19c version, providing a more resilient and scalable platform to support the Trust’s growing data needs.
Enhancing Performance
Secondly, we focused on enhancing application performance. We successfully installed and configured 6 WebLogic servers with Forms and Reports 12c and 4 Oracle REST Data Services (ORDS) servers with Apache Tomcat for APEX applications within the new OEL 8 environment. This ensured optimal performance and compatibility for all critical NHS Trust applications.
Streamlining Data Replication with Goldengate 21c
Finally, we streamlined data replication. We successfully deployed Goldengate 21c with Microservices Architecture to replace the legacy streams configuration between the Live and Data Warehouse RAC databases. This streamlined data replication, improving efficiency and reducing maintenance overhead.
Robust DR strategy
Another key aspect of this project was the implementation of a robust disaster recovery strategy. We built a 3-node standby RAC cluster on a separate site, providing a highly available and geographically diverse solution. This 3-node standby cluster ensures business continuity in the event of a major outage at the primary site. By leveraging Data Guard technology, we implemented real-time replication of data between the primary and standby clusters, minimizing data loss in the event of a disaster.
The successful completion of this project delivered several key benefits to the NHS Trust. These include:
- Improved Performance: The upgraded infrastructure delivered significant performance improvements for the Trust’s critical applications.
- Enhanced Reliability: The 3-node RAC cluster provides enhanced fault tolerance and high availability, minimizing downtime and ensuring business continuity.
- Increased Scalability: The new platform provides a solid foundation for future growth and expansion of the NHS Trust’s data infrastructure.
