Microsoft offers incentives to migrate SQL 2008 to Azure

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will reach the end of free extended support in July 2019. Microsoft Canada’s general manager, cloud and enterprise, Khalil Alfar, recommends two methods of maintaining support on SQL 2008 beyond the deadline. The first is to use an Azure SQL Database Managed Instance, which offers a SQL 2008 instance with three years of free security updates. For users running SSAS or SSRS, Microsoft recommends running SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines instead.
