Solid IT’s DB-Engines site named Microsoft SQL Server as their DBMS of the Year in 2016, basing the result on differences in “popularity scores” between January 2016 and January 2017. Popularity scores are based on the frequency of mentions on web sites, technical forums, job offers, tweets and profiles on professional networks.
MySQL was named as runner-up, with PostgreSQL taking third place.
