Article Summary:
The current position on Oracle AI Database 26ai, its relationship to 23ai and what existing 19c estates should plan next.

Oracle Database 23ai is no longer the right reference point for a new roadmap. Oracle now documents Oracle AI Database 26ai as its long-term release. The practical task for database teams is to separate the naming change from the real work: platform availability, application certification, feature use, support dates and a rehearsed upgrade path.
Use the current product baseline
Begin with the Oracle AI Database 26ai documentation, not a 2024 launch article. It brings together administration, upgrade, security, performance and application development material for the current release family.
AI Vector Search and other newer capabilities may be valuable, but they should not drive an upgrade in isolation. Reliability, vendor support, application requirements and the target operating model usually decide the sequence.
Understand the 19c runway
Oracle's current Lifetime Support Policy lists Premier Support for Oracle Database 19c through December 2029 and Extended Support through December 2032. Those dates provide planning space, not permission to wait until the final quarter. Large estates need time for discovery, remediation, testing and several business release windows.
- Prioritise unsupported or poorly patched systems
- Confirm third-party application certification
- Identify platform and option dependencies
- Plan capacity for parallel testing
- Reserve more than one viable cutover window
Check availability and entitlement
Oracle's 26ai Licensing Information distinguishes offerings, editions and separately licensed capabilities. Deployment choices can change technical availability and commercial treatment. Reconcile the target architecture with current contracts and obtain specialist licensing advice where needed.
Assess before you build
A useful assessment captures component usage, invalid objects, character set, time zone files, database links, external jobs, security integrations, backup design and performance baselines. Run Oracle-provided pre-upgrade checks and resolve findings through change control.
For packaged applications, the application supplier's certification and upgrade sequence can be more restrictive than the database engine itself.
Rehearse the whole service
A database upgrade is not complete when the instance opens. Test application paths, batch windows, monitoring, backups, replication, reporting and failover. Measure representative workload behaviour against the baseline and define rollback criteria before production cutover.
- Repeatable build and upgrade scripts
- Production-like data volume
- Application and integration testing
- Restore and recovery proof
- Operational handover and support readiness

A change to support, licensing, cloud architecture or a production database should be based on evidence from your own estate. Pro DBA can assess the current position, identify the material risks and help you plan the next step. Contact the Pro DBA team to discuss your environment.
