Commodities Trading Company – Oracle Tuning Assignment
Our City-based client was facing performance issues on their critical trading databases, so requested an urgent site visit to review their current database set up and resolve any bottlenecks identified.
A methodical approach
An Oracle Certified Tuning Expert from Pro DBA’s team went on-site for 3 days, where he methodically reviewed and addressed a list of issues collated by the client.
Solutions identified and implemented
A nightly data pump export job had started taking 4 hours to complete, a sudden leap on its previous duration of under 1 hour. Our consultant identified an unusual wait caused by a bug, and a workaround was promptly applied to resolve the issue.
AWR reports were generated for peak trading periods, and the top SQL resource consumers were identified. Causes and possible solutions were presented to the client, and the resulting tweaks greatly improved performance.
Further improvements were achieved by moving the client’s nightly RMAN backup from their primary to their standby database, eliminating resource contention with their critical end-of-day processes.
Intermittent hangs on the primary database were traced to the client’s use of Data Guard running in “Maximum Availability” mode. Commits were failing to be acknowledged by the standby in a timely manner due to network latency, and this was identified by tracing sessions and reviewing logs on both the primary and standby sides. A recommendation to implement “Oracle Active Data Guard Far Sync” was given to resolve this issue.
Successful conclusion
The client was both relieved and happy at the end of this assignment to have their critical databases back on track with good performance.
